1240-1300 MHz ham radio band discussed by CEPT ECC SE40

CEPT LogoCEPT ECC has released its news summary for January 2020 that includes the SE40 Rome meeting on January 14-16 which discussed compatibility between RNSS and Amateur Services in 1240-1300 MHz.

The coexistence between the Radio Navigation Satellite Service (RNSS) and the Amateur Services in the frequency band 1240 – 1300 MHz was discussed by the CEPT ECC SE40 Working Group. The IARU presented possible scenarios to be taken into account in the sharing studies. The meeting agreed that further work on this WI will be developed in the SE40 Forum.

The papers, Amateur vs RNSS – Amateur scenarios – initial ideas, Draft Report RNSS vs Radioamateur, and Draft Minutes, along with other SE40 Rome meeting documents can be downloaded via

QARMAN and Phoenix CubeSat Upcoming Deployment

QARMAN and Phoenix CubeSat Upcoming Deployment

Phoenix logoSeveral CubeSats are scheduled to be deployed from the International Space Station into orbit on Wednesday, February 12, including QARMAN and Phoenix.

QARMAN will perform experiments on stability during the the orbit phase and measurements of ablation and radiation during re-entry.

Amandine Denis ON4EYA reports QARMAN will deploy at 10:05 GMT, February 12 and the first beacons should be sent starting from 10:52 GMT over South-East Asia (Vietnam, Indonesia, Singapore) and then over Australia. See https://twitter.com/AmandineOufti

Phoenix is a 3U CubeSat developed by Arizona State University to study the effects of Urban Heat Islands through infrared remote sensing. Following deployment, the Phoenix operations team would appreciate as much help as possible with identifying the spacecraft and verifying that it is operational.

Phoenix is scheduled for a deployment time of 8:30 GMT on February 12.

Please note that two CubeSats being deployed on this date operate on the same frequency. Both Phoenix and QARMAN share the frequency of 437.35 MHz, and both utilize an AX.25 9600 baud protocol with GMSK modulation. Both CubeSats will also be deployed within 1.5 hours of each other, and will therefore be close to each other in orbit. Please be mindful of this situation, and if you have any doubt about the CubeSat that you are receiving, please get in touch with Sarah Rogers KI7OOY, Project Manager, Phoenix CubeSat, sroger13 [at} asu.edu with any questions or concerns.

To read more about the Phoenix CubeSat, its transmitter characteristics, and how you can decode the signal, please see the website at

5 watt 2.4 GHz Amplifier Kit for QO-100

5 watt 2.4 GHz Amplifier Kit for QO-100

5 watt 2400 MHz Amplifier Kit

5 watt 2400 MHz Amplifier Kit

The AMSAT-UK shop is now stocking a 5 watt 2.4 GHz amplifier kit for use with the QO-100 geostationary satellite.

The amplifier was designed by Kurt Moraw DJ0ABR and the kit was implemented by Arved Viehweger M0KDS.

The kit includes a single sided PCB on which is already mounted the PA transistor, there is a suitable heat sink on which to mount the PCB with the provided screws. All electronic components are included as are 2 SMA sockets. Assembly of the kits will require some surface mount components to be soldered to the PCB.

Note: It does not include a case for the unit and a separate 24 volt power supply will be required.

HuskySat-1 with 145/435 transponder to deploy from Cygnus

HuskySat-1 with 145/435 transponder to deploy from Cygnus

HuskySat-1

HuskySat-1

ARRL reports University of Washington’s HuskySat-1 3U CubeSat, launched November 2, 2019, is set to deploy January 31 after the vehicle that carried it to the International Space Station undocks.

ARRL say:

HuskySat-1 has remained stowed aboard a Northrop Grumman Cygnus supply vehicle. Within 24 hours after Cygnus’ departure from the ISS, HuskySat-1 and SwampSat 2 will be deployed into orbit. After deployment, HuskySat-1’s 1,200 bps BPSK beacon on 435.800 MHz should be active and decodable with the latest release of AMSAT’s FoxTelem software. HuskySat-1 is expected to carry out its primary mission before being turned over to AMSAT for amateur radio operation.

HuskySat-1 features a 30 kHz wide V/U linear transponder for SSB and CW. The uplink passband will be 145.910 – 145.940 MHz LSB/CW. The downlink passband will be 435.840 – 435.810 MHz USB/CW (inverting). Telemetry will be transmitted on 435.800 MHz, 1k2 bps BPSK with an experimental downlink at 24.049 GHz.
